If you’re planning on moving, you may be wondering what to do with the old stuff. If it’s in pretty good or decent condition, you might consider donating it. This will give it a chance to have a second life and be used by people who really need it. In some locations, you could have Goodwill pick up the items.

Moving is one of the best times to declutter your home. Since you have to go through everything, you can decide what you want to keep and what you need to get rid of. It doesn’t take long for items to build up in a residence, whether it’s a house or an apartment.

You may find that you no longer want all of these things. That makes it a perfect time to donate it to someone in need.

With less stuff, it will make the move that much easier. You may be able to get a smaller moving truck because you won’t have as much to transport.

If you’re looking to greatly reduce the number of items you move, you might consider finding a furnished apartment.

Having a place that already has the large furnishings included means you don’t have to transport any of them. You’ll just be responsible for your personal items.

Blueground offers fully-furnished, equipped and serviced apartments in some of the world's most sought after cities.

To find furnished apartments in Boston that fit within your budget, consider working with Blueground. They have a variety of tastefully furnished homes (from studios to three-bedroom units)  ready for you to call home. What to donate

When you’re sorting through your items, you’ll need to keep a few things in mind when it comes to donating it to places like Goodwill.

While it may seem like they are willing and able to take a variety of things, they can’t take it all.

There are a few things that they cannot accept.

Often, these will include items that are broken and need to be repaired. They also can’t take auto parts or accessories. Goodwill does not accept baby furnishings, including strollers, car seats, playhouses, and outdoor toys, among others. This often has to do with the fact that safety rules and regulations change regularly.

They don’t want to have items that could be dangerous to children.

There are numerous other items they can’t accept either, such as mattresses, sofa beds, stuffed animals, television, and used toys.

Now that you know what you can’t donate, you’re probably wondering what you can. They will take anything that is in good shape, including antiques and collectibles, artwork, housewares, small home furnishings, and sporting goods, among others.

Goodwill pickup

In some locations, these places will take larger furniture. This needs to be in good shape and can’t require any repairs or be incredibly dirty. When it comes to transporting these items, you can have help.

If you find that you don’t have a truck, there is a place you can call to get help with the large, cumbersome items. Goodwill in Boston has partnered with College Hunks Hauling Junk to help move these items. They operate in eastern and central Massachusetts, and there is a fee.

However, they have worked out a deal so that you will receive a discount if you use this service to haul your goods.

The nice thing about using this service is not only being able to donate. If you find that you have other junk that needs to be hauled away, College Hunks Hauling Junk can help you with that.

They can also help you move it from the property. This is really helpful, especially if you don’t have friends willing to help out.

Before moving your items, you can request an estimate. This is no-obligation. It will give you an idea of how much it will cost and whether you can afford it. The partner will come to your location and let you know what it will take to haul your stuff away.

If you agree and can afford the price, they will schedule a time to proceed with the pickup.

Benefits of donating to Goodwill

There are numerous reasons you should donate to Goodwill. The top benefit being that it will give your items a second life. Instead of going to a landfill and taking up space, it can be used by others in need.

Even when you go through their partner to have your items picked up, you still have the ability to deduct the donation on your taxes. You’ll have to go to the site or to one of their locations, but you can get a tax receipt.

Moving is a great time to go through your belongings. You can decide which ones you should keep and which you should donate. Taking less stuff to your new residence will make the process easier and less stressful.
